In 2008, VU’s Design Studio was launched under a new name, Hatch Studio MetroWest. As its name suggests, it is has relocated from the City Flinders Street campus to MetroWest in Footscray. The Studio is a fully functioning graphic design consultancy and production house. It involves students in the generation of design solutions for internal and external clients. The design studio is making a significant contribution to bringing both industry and community into the learning arena, primarily through activities that involve students, industry and staff, and external partners in real projects.

The aim of the studio is to provide students with an avenue in which they may experience the professional procedures and practices of an industry-based studio. This is achieved by allowing them to produce industry-based jobs in a studio environment. Graphic design students have an active input in client projects and make informed choices leading to successful design outcomes. Direct contact with clients is valuable and within a studio framework students are able to relax and experience it for themselves. The design studio provides and completes a range of industry projects including: branding, publications, promotional material, print service, video production, animation and web site design.

As a past graphic design student in this studio and graduate at Victoria University, I strongly believe my time in the design studio was a really enjoyable experience. Being there helped me improve my skills and complete ongoing briefs in tight timeframes. The experience I gained in the studio helped me become a lot more confident in myself and also in my work, knowing exactly what my design goals are. I got a professional feel of what working in a design studio is like and how the studio works as a whole.

After completing my time in the studio, I realised that graphic design is a career that I wanted to work in and stay in for the long term. The program is very beneficial to all students who enter the studio, assisting individuals to focus and to improve their chances to land that dream job.

The Design Studio runs weekdays, 9am–5pm, at MetroWest, 138 Nicholson Street, Footscary. Beata Cranswick, the Studio Manager, leads a team of graphic design students, interns and occasional staff through various projects. Beata is responsible for providing overall project management as well as innovative design solutions; all the while creating a learning environment in the workplace and community opportunities for graphic design students to develop their skills in the workforce.

Beata invites you to, “Come in, meet our team, and see our facilities. See how our Design Studio can be of assistance to you and your organization.”

Hatch also offers ‘obligation free’ quotes for your projects.

Sarah is currently studying a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Communications at Swinburne University.
